Interactive binocular treatment (I-BiT) for amblyopia: results of a pilot study of 3D shutter glasses system.

Interactive binocular treatment (I-BiT) for amblyopia: results of a pilot study of 3D shutter glasses system.

.....A computer-based interactive binocular treatment system (I-BiT) for amblyopia has been developed, which utilizes commercially available 3D 'shutter glasses'. ....Thirty minutes of I-BiT treatment was given once weekly for 6 weeks. Treatment sessions consisted of playing a computer game and watching a DVD through the I-BiT system. VA was assessed at baseline, mid-treatment, at the end of treatment, and at 4 weeks post treatment. ..... Nine patients (90%) completed the full course of I-BiT treatment with a mean improvement of 0.18 .... Six out of nine patients (67%) who completed the treatment showed a clinically significant improvement....This small, uncontrolled study has shown VA gains with 3 hours of I-BiT treatment. ...-these results suggest that further investigation of I-BiT treatment is worthwhile......

Comments: I always find it amazing when my colleagues re-invent the vision therapy paradigm that amblyopia is a binocular vision problem that should be treated in a binocular fashion. Amazed and over-joyed. Now if they would only credit the pioneers of behavioral/functional/developmental optometry for these insights I would be also be pleased. DM

Bagolini glasses: do they affect the horizontal prism fusion amplitude?

Bagolini glasses: do they affect the horizontal prism fusion amplitude?

Bagolini striated glasses (BSG) can be used while performing the prism fusion amplitude to verify the maintenance of binocularity. .... Fifty-two normal subjects with a mean age of 21 years ... were recruited. The median prism fusion amplitude at near was 10 BI to 33 BO with the BSG and 13 BI to 38 BO without.... At distance the median amplitude was 8 BI to 33 BO both with and without these glasses .... Although BSG are useful to verify whether binocularity is maintained, significantly smaller fusional ranges were obtained during measurements at near.....

Hardest Working Man in Optometry? One of Many!

Dr. Marc Taub was kind enough to say some very nice words about me and my various activities. Thank you Marc.  I deeply appreciate all that we have done in the past and will do in the future. DM

Firecrackers, Aerials, Homemade Explosives Cause Most Deaths

60% of All Fireworks Injuries Occur Around July 4th; Firecrackers, Aerials, Homemade Explosives Cause Most Deaths, Injuries

Injuries From Fireworks in the United States

Information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention: Injuries From Fireworks in the United States

Fireworks traditionally are used in the United States to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that 8500 persons in the United States are treated in emergency departments each year for fireworks-related injuries (1). Of all fireworks-related injuries, 70%--75% occur during a 30-day period that surrounds the July 4th holiday (June 23--July 23) (2). Seven of every 100 persons injured by fireworks are hospitalized, approximately 40% of those injured are children aged <14 years, and males are injured three times more often than females (1). The injury rate is highest among boys aged 10--14 years (3). Most commonly, injuries from fireworks affect the hands (34%), face (12%), and eyes (17%) (4). Injuries are more frequent and more severe among persons who are active participants than among bystanders (3).

The estimated annual cost of fireworks-related injuries is $100 million (4). In 1997, the U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimated that fireworks were responsible for direct property damage of $22.7 million (5).

ADD/ADHD & Vision - College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD)

ADD/ADHD & Vision - College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD)

ADD/ADHD and Vision: COVD has several interesting articles and videos on this topic.

At Lyons Family Eye Care (http://www.LyonsFamilyEyeCare.com) we not only conduct comprehensive eye and vision examinations and Visual Efficiency Evaluations, but we also have the computerized assessment of attention  TOVA test (Test of Variables Attention)
to assist us in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, ADD, and impulsivity.

Optometry Times has recognized several of the outstanding  research/poster presentations at the American Optometric Association's annual meeting: Optometry's Meeting in San Diego, CA.

Almost 100 posters were presented by researchers, clinician's and industry leaders on a wide variety of topics from Binocular Vision to Eye Disease and Contact Lenses.

If you want to show off your work to thousands of professionals interested in the latest clinically relevant research, the AOA Optometry's Meeting is the place to be!

Next year's AOA Call for Lectures is now open until the beginning of August. Watch for the the Call for Posters as well. Submit your abstracts. Join us at next's year's meeting with your colleagues.
