Outcomes of strabismus surgery for esotropia in children with down syndrome compared with matched controls

Outcomes of strabismus surgery for esotropia in children with down syndrome compared with matched controls

.... Mean preoperative esotropia was 28.4 prism diopters (PD) in the DS group and 27.9 PD in the control group. ..... The 4-month postoperative mean angles of esotropia for the DS and control groups were 3.15 and 2.66 PD, respectively. The 24-month mean angles of esotropia for the DS and control groups were 7.09 and 6.60 PD, respectively...

Comments: The esotropia noted in those with Down Syndrome tend to be functional in nature (accommodative esotropia) with the esotropia improving or eliminated with a pair of multifocal lenses (bifocals). It is interesting that the residual post surgical esotropia is becoming greater over time as noted in this study. Will these patients return to about 30 PD of esotropia as is typical in accommodative esotropia in another year or two? DM
