Ocular motor score a novel clinical approach to evaluating ocular motor function in children

Ocular motor score a novel clinical approach to evaluating ocular motor function in children

...Ocular motility disturbances are common in a number of neuropaediatric and neurometabolic disorders. Assessment of ocular motor function can be a source of information for diagnosis and follow-up of these patients....A total of 233 children and young adults, .....This study provides reference values for the OMS test in a population aged 0.5–19 years. The test may be valuable as a screening tool for identification and follow-up of ocular motor dysfunction in children and young adults....

Childhood blepharokeratoconjunctivitis: characterising a severe phenotype in white adolescents

Childhood blepharokeratoconjunctivitis: characterising a severe phenotype in white adolescents

...Suboptimal treatment of blepharokeratoconjunctivitis in white children may permit a progressively destructive sight-threatening phenotype, which may last into adulthood and require immunosuppression. Appropriate aggressive steroid-based and steroid-sparing strategies are vital for disease remission.....

Harold Solan, OD, FAAO, FCOVD: Passes Away

Dr. Irwin Suchoff just emailed me this message: "Sid Groffman called me to tell me Harold Solan passed away today. He had been declining with Alzheimer's for some time, and at least his death was peaceful, the result of pneumonia.Dick Kavner and I bought our first practice from him, and he and I had a special relationship for over 50 years. The man was a giant. His research brought functional/developmental vision to the level is is at today."

Comments: Watch this space for more information. We have lost a giant in optometry. DM

Visual Perception Improved With Magnetic Stimulation

Visual Perception Improved With Magnetic Stimulation

.....The right Frontal Eye Field (FEF) is a region of the human brain, which has been consistently involved in visuo-spatial attention and access to consciousness. Nonetheless, the extent of this cortical site’s ability to influence specific aspects of visual performance remains debated. We hereby manipulated pre-target activity on the right FEF and explored its influence on the detection and categorization of low-contrast near-threshold visual stimuli. Our data show that pre-target frontal neurostimulation has the potential when used alone to induce enhancements of conscious visual detection. More interestingly, when FEF stimulation was combined with visuo-spatial cues, improvements remained present only for trials in which the cue correctly predicted the location of the subsequent target. Our data provide evidence for the causal role of the right FEF pre-target activity in the modulation of human conscious vision and reveal the dependence of such neurostimulatory effects on the state of activity set up by cue validity in the dorsal attentional orienting network. ...

Our Little Bear Sees

As many of you know, I recently spoke at the Children's Hospital of Omaha, NE at the American Conference on Pediatric Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment. I have a keen interest in this area and have just discovered a resource for parents written by parents.

ADHD Prevalence in Lebanese School-Age Population.

ADHD Prevalence in Lebanese School-Age Population.

....The prevalence of ADHD Inattentive subtype was 3 per 1,000, Hyperactive-Impulsive subtype 12 per 1,000, and ADHD Combined subtype 17 per 1,000. ADHD was significantly more prevalent in boys than in girls....

Comments: No eye/vision examination was completed on these children so we do not know how many had CI/vision problems which is linked to ADHD. DM
